"Finis has an extraordinary grasp of the essentials of movement. He can break down any movement, however complex, into its component parts which I have found is something other teachers cannot do. He understands the physics of the movement and what's going on in the body to produce it. He can see very quickly what you're doing wrong and what you're doing right." —Donna Knipp, New York NY
"What I liked best (apart from Finis's inborn patience!) was the inspired barre sequences that strengthen and train; the center floor combinations blending structure and expressiveness while improving balance and alignment; the floor stretches and relaxation sequences that promote the ultimate integration of Finis's invaluable instruction. The whole experience is wonderfully fulfilling!" —Matri Strauss, New York, NY
"I like that the class progressed throughout two days. There was enough time to work on combinations and move so I could see improvement by the end of the workshop." —Ikima Kersh, Flushing, NY
"As someone returning to ballet after some time, the slow pace was wonderful. I also appreciated Finis's attention to the detail of each movement—this is ballet, after all!" —Sara Holquist, Astoria, NY
"Ballet has always been one of the things I've always wanted to learn but couldn't for one reason or another. When you take a Finis Workshop it's clear he has been teaching for many years and you can see why he is considered one of the best. His workshop features many of the exercises he uses in his open classes during the week but he spends more time breaking down the mechanics. His explanations are based on common sense which is why he makes ballet accessible to 'everyone.'"—Frances Lee, New York, NY
"I liked the explanations of the 'physics' of ballet—how turns work, how to counterbalance your weight, how to align the body for balance. It has really helped me go forward—I went to my regular ballet class today and felt much more confident."—Maria Lindenfeldar, Princeton, NJ
"Finis's suggestions about training your lungs to expand sideways rather than forward was invaluable. I've often been accused of breathing 'noticeably' and Finis demonstrated how to breathe correctly. This single piece of information was worth the price of the entire workshop!" — Victoria Matus, New York, NY
"I really like that the workshop is challenging and yet non-intimidating. There is a warm and collegial atmosphere which is conducive to learning and making new connections while strengthening yourself as you study ballet as an art form."—Stefan Veronica Davis, Bronx, NY
TEACHER & ADULT STUDENT WORKSHOP: THE FUNDAMENTALS OF BALLET TECHNIQUE
The Ailey Studios in New York City
August 7 & 8, 2010
$375
Whether you're a teacher or an adult beginner, this 10-hour weekend workshop will turn Mystery into Mastery. Since 1972, Finis Jhung has been one of New York's most sought-after teachers because of his singular ability to make ballet accessible to dancers of all talents, ages, and body types. His innovative teaching techniques are based on years of studying the world's best dancers in performance and on video and finding that these extraordinary artists prepare for balances, turns, and jumps in ways not taught in the traditional ballet class.
At this workshop, you will learn the "untaught" preparations which make a world of difference. Learn how to place yourself and work your muscles for maximum strength, control and freedom of movement. Learn what really matters! Bring your dance clothes so you can take class. When you wish, sit and observe. To dance is to live!
